R3 has a set of business solutions for GovCon. They run on a single platform and on and within a Microsoft SharePoint environment. The R3 GovCon Suite is a business user experience layered on SharePoint. Thus, you have multiple deployment options. There is no difference in licensing cost or the feature set of the software.
You can deploy R3 solutions in the R3 Cloud Workplace (our SaaS offering), a Private Cloud or On Premise. You cannot deploy our solutions within the Microsoft Office 365 environment. In this article we will speak briefly about the SharePoint environment our solutions run in and then the three deployment options.
The required SharePoint environment
R3 solutions use SharePoint as our database. It is also the full context for our solution. It manages the underlying security and administration. Our solutions run within this environment. At this time our solutions run within a SharePoint 2013 or SharePoint 2016 environment. They can be Foundation, SharePoint Server or SharePoint Enterprise.
The best environment for R3 is just a well running Microsoft SharePoint environment built to best practices of Microsoft. We do not require extra databases or services or servers. Our software is installed right into the SharePoint environment. Users access R3 solutions by logging into a SharePoint environment using the organizations authentication.
R3 Cloud Workplace – SaaS offering
R3 has a SaaS offering (software as a service) called the “R3 Cloud Workplace”. This offering runs in our semi-shared cloud environment. This makes it easy for you to get started with R3 solutions and accelerate the value that they bring to your business.
Your R3 solutions will be available online through this fully managed service. We run the R3 Cloud on a robust Amazon Web Services world class environment. This service is deployed in AWS US East-West. This offering of AWS is FedRAMP compliant. It supports NIST 800 series requirements. You can read about AWS FedRAMP compliance.
With the R3 Cloud Workplace you get your own secure workplace instance where you can run your R3 solutions and have them your way. It is easy to get going, convenient to use, supports your special way of working and is very cost-effective. We keep your costs down by leveraging infrastructure, platform software, and operating services. You benefit from these shared elements of the service.
However, every customer has their own unique workplace instance. Each customer has their own unique database holding all documents, data, and configuration. Your information is not combined with other customers. Also, your solutions and their configuration are separately managed. This allows you to choose your R3 solutions, extensions and enhancements. And, you can have your own configuration and customizations.

- Control over when and what gets upgraded.
On Premise
Some customers have an existing Microsoft SharePoint environment or they just want to deploy the R3 solutions on an environment fully within their control. We support these “On Premise” deployments.
If you already, have a SharePoint 2013 or 2016 environment in place on premise, we can install R3 software right on top of the environment. For R3 Solutions the best environment for deployment is one that meets the best practices of Microsoft for a SharePoint deployment. We do not require separate databases, servers, services or authentication.
For new environments, we work shoulder-to-shoulder with your IT personnel to deploy the infrastructure, deploy and configure platform software (Windows, SQL Server and SharePoint), and then, install and configure the R3 platform and solutions.
Private Cloud
Some customers want to run their solutions in the cloud to take advantage of cloud infrastructure and services. And, they want a dedicated environment vs. using the semi-shared infrastructure of the R3 Cloud. We support these “Private Cloud” deployments.
We support our customers’ Private Cloud implementations with any infrastructure provided. However, the two most standard Private Cloud providers that we work with are Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure.
Typically, we work shoulder-to-shoulder with your IT personnel to deploy the infrastructure, deploy and configure platform software (Windows, SQL Server and SharePoint), and then, install and configure the R3 platform and solutions.
